Controls in an MMORPG are a tricky one to get right and a game that is going to be set both on the ground and in space is especially tricky. While the controls laid out here are subject to change if and when we find they don’t give the experience we want players to have, this is what we’ve got for now:
Ground movement
- Standard WASD for moving, with A and D strafing.
- Turn left and right with Q and E
- Actions button is F
- R to auto-run; any key other than strafe or turn will cancel auto-run
- Combat and abilities are activated using 1-0 on the number line
- X to toggle sit/crouch/stand
Space movement (ship)
- WASD for basic movement, with A and D strafing
- Turn left and right with Q and E
- Bank left and right with Z and C (“do a barrel roll!”)
- Pull up and down with T and G
- Increase and decrease speed with < and >
- X to come to a stop
Space movement (spacewalk)
- Same controls as ground movement
- T and G control up and down movement, respectively.
- X to toggle “crouch” (so you can squeeze through tight spaces)
Targeting
- Target the nearest enemy with Tab.
- Cycle through enemies with Tab.
- Cancel targeting with Esc.
- Mobs and NPCs must not react to being targeted – just looking at someone should not put a target into “fight or flight” mode (I’m looking at you, Skyrim).
Camera Controls
- Standard viewpoint should be directly behind the player character, looking slightly down so the ground and anything on it can be targeted.
- Hold the right mouse button to engage camera movement mode, then move the mouse left/right/up/down to spin the camera left/right/down/up (x/y invert toggles in the options menu).
- Zoom in/out with the scrollbar or Ctrl-+/- respectively.
- The camera should stay where the player puts it when moving, fighting, etc. (if a player wants to go into combat looking directly at their own character’s armpit, let them)
- Reset the camera to the standard position and zoom by pressing V.
